Berlin WW2 attractions you can visit for free

The two biggest WW2 sites in the center are free. The Topography of Terror opens daily, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The field of stelae at the Holocaust Memorial is open 24 hours.

A guide adds the story that links them. Two of the picks, the 2-hour walk and the historian-led tour, meet at the Brandenburg Gate.

Several of these walks touch the Cold War too; for the Wall itself, a Berlin Wall tour covers the East Side Gallery.

Hitler's bunker in Berlin: what the tours show

Four of the picks stop at the site of Hitler's bunker: the 2-hour walk, the 3-hour walk, the 4-hour walk and the historian-led tour. They show you where it was.

Topography of Terror: free and open daily

The Topography of Terror is a documentation center at Niederkirchnerstraße 8. It opens daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The outdoor areas close at nightfall, by 8 p.m. at the latest. No closed days are listed.

One tour listing calls the site the former Gestapo and SS headquarters. A stretch of the Berlin Wall of about 650 feet (200 m) stands on the grounds.

Do you need a Topography of Terror ticket?

No. Entry is free.

Holocaust Memorial Berlin: the field of stelae and the Information Centre

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is Germany's central Holocaust memorial. It opened on 10 May 2005 at Cora-Berliner-Strasse 1.

Peter Eisenman designed the field of 2,710 concrete stelae. It covers about 4.7 acres (19,073 m²) and is open 24 hours, free of charge.

Below it is the Information Centre. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing.

Visiting Berlin's memorial to the Holocaust: security and audio guide

Entry to the Information Centre is free. There is a security check, and you may have to wait. Bags larger than about 22 × 16 × 8 inches (55 × 40 × 20 cm) and suitcases are not allowed; lockers are nearby.

An audio guide costs €3, or €2 reduced.

Beyond the city: Sachsenhausen

The main WWII site outside Berlin is the Sachsenhausen memorial, in Oranienburg. Entry is free. A Sachsenhausen tour takes about 4 to 6 hours from the city.
