Brandenburg Gate at a glance: where it is, cost, hours, time needed

The Brandenburg Gate stands on Pariser Platz, a square for walkers only since 2002. It was built from 1788 to 1791 and designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans.

The nearest station is S+U Brandenburger Tor, about 650 to 1,000 feet (200 to 300 m) away. The Berlin Tourist Information Centre at the Gate opens daily, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pick a group walk if you want the dome arranged for you. Pick a rooftop meal if you want a table and no registration of your own. Pick the private walk if you want your own guide for the whole center.

Do you need Brandenburg Gate tickets?

No. The Gate stands on a public square. Travel guides say it is free and open at any hour.

What to know about Berlin's Brandenburg Gate

The Gate was built under King Frederick William II. In the Cold War it was a sign of a divided city. After the Wall fell, it became a national symbol of peace and unity.

The Brandenburg Gate and the Wall

After the Wall went up in August 1961, the Gate stood in the border zone. No one from East or West Berlin could visit it. It reopened on 22 December 1989, and more than 100,000 people cheered.

A double row of cobblestones on Platz des 18. März marks where the Wall curved in front of the Gate. For the rest of the Wall, see our Berlin Wall guide.

Visiting the Reichstag dome: free registration or a tour

The dome and roof terrace are free, but you must register online in advance. You cannot register by phone.

Visits start every quarter of an hour. The last entry is at 9:45 p.m. Your booking is personal and cannot be passed on.

  • Step 1: fill in the online form with every visitor's last name, first name and date of birth.
  • Step 2: bring the original photo ID (ID card or passport) for everyone aged 16 and up. Ages 14 and 15 need an ID with name and photo, such as a student ID.
  • Step 3: on the day, a 20-minute audio guide runs on the roof terrace in 12 languages.
  • Same day? Register at the service centre on Platz der Republik. Your confirmation must be issued at least 2 hours before the visit.

The dome is closed from 23 August to 19 November 2027. The roof terrace stays open.

Getting to the Brandenburg Gate on Pariser Platz

Take the S1, S2, S25, S26 or U5 to S+U Brandenburger Tor. For the Reichstag, the U5 stop is Bundestag, one stop from Hauptbahnhof.

The U5 runs east from the Gate to Unter den Linden, Museumsinsel, Rotes Rathaus and Alexanderplatz. Tickets and zones are in our transport guide.

Best time for a Brandenburg Gate visit

visitBerlin names May to September as the best time for Berlin, with the most reliable weather. Winter is often around freezing.

Dome slots run until 9:45 p.m., so you can pair the Gate with an evening visit to the dome.

A walk from the Gate: Reichstag, Memorial, Unter den Linden, Tiergarten

The Reichstag, Unter den Linden and the Tiergarten park all lie close to Pariser Platz.

Close by is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, at Cora-Berliner-Strasse 1. Its field of 2,710 concrete stelae is free and open 24 hours. The Information Centre below it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a security check.

From the Gate and the Memorial, walk on to Checkpoint Charlie, where Trabi tours start.

Tips for the Gate and the Reichstag

  1. Register for the dome early

Entry is free, but only with online registration ahead. Same-day slots need at least 2 hours' notice at the service centre.

  2. Bring the original ID

Everyone 16 and older needs a valid ID card or passport. A copy is not enough.

  3. Keep 2 hours of slack

The guided Reichstag tour may start up to 2 hours earlier or later than booked. Don't plan anything tight around it.

  4. Check closure dates

The dome closes on 24 December, from 4 p.m. on 31 December, and from 23 August to 19 November 2027.
