Guided tour or on your own at Sachsenhausen?
Take a guide if you want the history explained. Go alone if you like to read the exhibitions at your own pace.
Entry to the memorial and its museums is free. An audio guide costs €3.50. On Saturdays, the memorial runs its own public tour in English at 11 a.m. It lasts about two hours and costs €3.50. You sign up in person at the Visitor Information Centre. The memorial recommends it for ages 14 and up.
A visit here is moving and heavy. Plan something quiet for the evening.
Many visitors pair Sachsenhausen with one of the WW2 tours in Berlin the day before.
Sachsenhausen tours in English
All five picks run in English. One more tour on GetYourGuide runs only in Spanish, so we left it out.
What a Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum tour covers
The listings name the camp gate at Tower A, the barracks, the prison cells, the infirmary barracks and the "Station Z" memorial. The guides cover the camp before, during and after the war.
A Sachsenhausen concentration camp self-guided tour: how to go alone
Take the S1 or the RE5 to Oranienburg. Get off at Oranienburg, not at Sachsenhausen station.
From Oranienburg station, walk about 20 minutes, or take bus 804 or 821 to the stop "Gedenkstätte". Bus 804 runs hourly; the last one leaves at 5:19 p.m.
You need an ABC ticket from Hauptbahnhof or Friedrichstraße. It also covers the buses in Oranienburg. Paper tickets must be stamped before you travel. How the Berlin train and its zones work is in our transport guide.
Sachsenhausen fills most of a day. For lighter options, see our day tours from Berlin.
How near Berlin is it?
The S1 takes 45 minutes from Friedrichstraße and runs every 20 minutes. The RE5 takes 25 minutes from Hauptbahnhof and runs hourly.
Opening times
In winter (27 October to 30 March), the grounds and exhibitions open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In summer (31 March to 26 October), they open until 6 p.m. The Visitor Information Center opens daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The memorial's page lists no closed days.
Tips for a Sachsenhausen visit
Buy the ABC ticket first
Most train tours don't include it. Buy it before you board, and stamp a paper ticket.
Bring food and water
Listings advise snacks and drinks. One says you can't buy any on site.
Check the winter hours
From 27 October the memorial closes at 4:30 p.m. Start early if you go alone.
Dress for the weather
Tours run in all weather, mostly outdoors. The ground can be muddy after rain.
