Where the Wall in Berlin stood and what it separated

The Wall closed off West Berlin from everything around it. It ran about 97 miles (156.4 km) in all. About 27 miles (43.7 km) of it split East from West Berlin. The rest cut West Berlin off from East Germany around it.

East Germany began building it in the early hours of 13 August 1961. In spring 1961, thousands of people were leaving East Germany for the West. The first Wall was concrete blocks and barbed wire along the line between the city sectors.

At least 136 people were killed at the Wall between 1961 and 1989. On 9 November 1989, a statement at a press conference led to the border opening by surprise. Workers began tearing down the Wall in the city center the next day.

Today a double row of cobblestones marks where it ran, over about 3.5 miles (5.7 km) in the center. Cast-iron plaques read "Berliner Mauer 1961-1989". For the full line, our Berlin Wall map shows where it ran through the city.

The Berlin Wall now: what is left to see

Where can you see a real Berlin Wall piece? Real Wall is left at only a few places. The list below runs in route order and says what you actually see at each stop.

  • Bernauer Strasse: the Wall Memorial grounds, with an outdoor exhibition and a Documentation Center with a viewing tower. One tour listing calls it the most complete surviving stretch.
  • Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast): a former border crossing hall, now a free museum. No Wall here.
  • Checkpoint Charlie: the former crossing point. The hut, watchtower and barrier are copies. A private Wall Museum stands next to it.
  • Niederkirchnerstrasse: a preserved stretch of about 650 feet (200 m), next to the free Topography of Terror.
  • East Side Gallery: 0.8 miles (1.3 km) of painted Wall on Mühlenstraße, open around the clock.

The Wall Memorial in Berlin on Bernauer Strasse

Every exhibition on Bernauer Strasse is free. Only guided tours and workshops cost extra.

The outdoor exhibition is open every day, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Visitor Center (Bernauer Straße 119) and the Documentation Center (Bernauer Straße 111) open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Both are closed on Mondays.

The Documentation Center has a viewing tower. The last trip up is at 5:45 p.m. Both centers close on 24, 25 and 31 December 2026.

Other Wall sites worth a stop

Checkpoint Charlie is free to see from the street. The Wall Museum next to it opens daily, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and adults pay €18.50.

The BlackBox Cold War exhibition on Friedrichstraße has been closed since January 2026, so skip it.

The Topography of Terror is free and opens daily, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Palace of Tears is free too and opens Tuesday to Sunday.

The Brandenburg Gate stood in the border zone from 1961, and no one from East or West could visit it. A double row of cobblestones on Platz des 18. März marks where the Wall curved in front of it.

A half-day Wall route of your own, in order

Start at Bernauer Strasse and end at the East Side Gallery. The Gallery never closes, so it goes last.

  • Bernauer Strasse: the outdoor exhibition opens at 8 a.m. Take the S1, S2, S25 or S26 to Nordbahnhof, or the U8 to Bernauer Straße.
  • Palace of Tears: open Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Checkpoint Charlie: a short stop at the former crossing.
  • Niederkirchnerstrasse and the Topography of Terror: a real stretch of Wall and a free exhibition.
  • East Side Gallery: the painted Wall, open around the clock.

Short on time? Drop the Palace of Tears and Checkpoint Charlie. Neither shows original Wall.

Guided tour or on your own: how to choose

Go alone if you mainly want photos. Book a guide if you want the story. The sites are free, but the signs do not tell you who escaped where, or how the border worked.

A good guide links the sites into one story. A walk from €20 is a small price for that. The cheapest listed walk starts from €1.20.

One East Side Gallery boat trip is listed, but its commentary is in German only, so we left it out.

Getting there, opening times and what is free

For Bernauer Strasse, take the S1, S2, S25 or S26 or tram M10 to Nordbahnhof. The U8 stops at Bernauer Straße and the U6 at Naturkundemuseum. Bus 247 also stops nearby.

The East Side Gallery runs between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaum Bridge. It is open around the clock.

Both main Wall sites are among the best free attractions in Berlin, so you can do the route above at no cost. Tickets and lines are in our transport guide.
