Potsdam: palaces and parks

Sanssouci Palace closed

Potsdam is the easiest day trip: about 27 minutes by train from Berlin Hbf. Sanssouci Palace opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from April to October, and to 4:30 p.m. in November and December. It is closed on Mondays.

A single palace ticket costs €14, and the sanssouci+ ticket for all open palaces costs €22. Your ticket has a fixed time slot.

The park is free and open every day from 8 a.m. until dark.

Sachsenhausen Memorial: what to know before you go

Sachsenhausen is free to visit. Entry to the memorial and its museums costs nothing, and an audio guide costs €3.50.

On Saturdays at 11 a.m., the memorial runs a public tour in English. It takes about 2 hours and is recommended for ages 14 and up.

To get there, take the S1 from Friedrichstraße (45 minutes) or the RE5 from Hauptbahnhof (25 minutes) to Oranienburg. Then take bus 804 or walk 20 minutes. You need a Berlin ABC ticket.

It is a serious, moving visit. A guide adds the context that the grounds alone do not give you.

Spreewald: boats, canals and villages

The Spreewald is a full day of canals and villages, best done by train. The RE20 runs every hour from Berlin Hauptbahnhof and takes about 50 minutes from BER airport to Lübbenau.

The VBB says the RE2 links Berlin and Lübbenau in about 90 minutes. The RE2 has major works from June 14 to December 12, 2026, so check your train.

The one Spreewald tour on GetYourGuide runs in German only, so we did not list it.

Is the Spreewald boat tour worth it?

Yes, if you like slow days on the water. From April to October, punts leave the Lübbenau harbor for round trips to Lehde of 2 to 3 hours, from €14 per person.

The Spreewald in winter

From November to March, a 1 hour 15 punt trip leaves daily at 11:00 and 13:00, from €14. It is cancelled when hard frost freezes the canals.

Tropical Islands is an indoor beach about 31 miles (50 km) south of Berlin-Schönefeld. It suits families and cold or rainy days.

Take the train to Brand Tropical Islands station, then the free shuttle bus. The shuttle is timed to the trains, but it does not wait if your train is late. By car, take the A13 to the Staakow exit.

Tropical Islands opening times and prices

It is open 365 days a year, holidays included. Some attractions have their own hours, and prices change by day, so check the booking calendar before you go.

More trips by train: Leipzig, Wittenberg, Saxon Switzerland

A few more day trips outside Berlin work by train for a long day.

  • Leipzig: the fastest train from Berlin Hbf takes 1 hour 15 minutes, with up to 23 direct trains a day.
  • Wittenberg: check train times on bahn.de.
  • Saxon Switzerland: go via Dresden. The S1 runs from Dresden to Kurort Rathen and Bad Schandau. There are works on the line in November 2026, so check before you go.

Tour or go on your own?

Go on your own when the place is free and easy to reach. Sachsenhausen is free, and so is the park in Potsdam. Both are on the Berlin ABC ticket.

An ABC single ticket costs €5, and an ABC 24-hour ticket €12.90.

Book a tour if you want the history explained, an English guide and no planning.

Our guide to getting around Berlin explains the ABC ticket for Potsdam and Oranienburg.

For the Spreewald, Dresden or the lakes, a car lets you set your own hours.

Planning tips: season, time, what to bring

May to September is the best time for day trips, says visitBerlin. The weather is most reliable then.

Winter days are short. In January the sun sets at about 4:30 p.m., and highs are about 36°F (2.4°C).

Check the winter hours: Sachsenhausen closes at 4:30 p.m. from October 27 to March 30, and Sanssouci Palace is closed on Mondays. Spreewald punts run twice a day in winter.

Bring comfortable shoes, water and snacks. The Sachsenhausen tours ask for them.

Tips for a day trip from Berlin

  1. Find the right meeting point

The train tour meets by the Tränenpalast at Friedrichstraße, the bus tour at Reichstagufer 17. The four-language tour meets at the World Time Clock on Alexanderplatz.

  2. Buy the ABC ticket

Two Sachsenhausen train tours need a Berlin ABC ticket, which you buy yourself. Stamp a paper ticket before you ride.

  3. Check the language

The Potsdam city tour gives live commentary mostly in German. Pick an English tour if that matters to you.

  4. Avoid Mondays in Potsdam

Sanssouci Palace is closed on Mondays. The park stays open.
