What Checkpoint Charlie is today
Checkpoint Charlie is a free street corner. It stands at Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse. The hut, the watchtower and the barrier you see are copies. A tall mast shows a soldier's photo.
During the Cold War, East Germany opened this crossing ten weeks after it closed the border. Only Allied soldiers, diplomats and foreigners could use it. The Americans ran the Allied post on the West Berlin side.
On the square, a free outdoor exhibition called "Crossing the Iron Curtain" tells the story. A new memorial site, Forum Checkpoint Charlie, is planned, with building to start in 2030.
Checkpoint Charlie shows no original Wall, so pair it with a Berlin Wall tour that takes in the East Side Gallery.

Is the Berlin museum at Checkpoint Charlie worth it?
It is a private museum with a ticket. The street corner and the outdoor exhibition are free. If you want to see real Wall, the free sites on Bernauer Strasse and the East Side Gallery show more of it.
Trabant tours in Berlin: drive a Trabi yourself
All three Trabi tours start at Zimmerstraße 97, a few steps from Checkpoint Charlie. You drive in a convoy behind a guide. Commentary comes over the radio in your car.
The 75-minute Safari and the 135-minute Wall Ride need a driver aged 18+ with a class B license who can drive a manual car. Bring your license. Everyone in the car needs a ticket, and children get a free one. Up to 4 people fit in each Trabi.
The E-Trabi tour lasts 75 minutes and passes the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. Check its driver rules on the listing before you book.
Teufelsberg: the Cold War listening station
Teufelsberg is a hill in the west of Berlin with the ruins of a former listening station. Today it holds street art and an exhibition called "Declassified". The view over the city is wide.
The site is about 1.2 miles (2 km) on foot from S-Bahn Heerstraße or Grunewald, about 30 minutes. It opens daily from 11 a.m. to sunset. It is not for children under 5 or wheelchair users.
Closed now: BlackBox Cold War
The BlackBox Cold War exhibition on Friedrichstraße has been closed since January 2026. Don't walk there for it.
