Is Giethoorn worth visiting? The town and things to do

Yes, if you like quiet water and old farmhouses. Giethoorn is a small town with no roads for cars in its old center, so you see it by boat or on foot.

Peat diggers founded it around the 13th century. Their ponds and ditches later became the canals, crossed by dozens of small wooden bridges.

Things to do in Giethoorn

The village is small, so a few hours is enough for the main things:

  • Take a guided canal cruise of about an hour.
  • Rent an electric whisper boat and steer it yourself.
  • Walk the paths along the canals and over the wooden bridges.
  • Go early or late: the water is quietest before 10:00 and after 16:00.

Giethoorn boat tour or boat hire?

Take a guided cruise for the story, about an hour, or rent a whisper boat for 1 to 2 hours on your own.

Giethoorn has three kinds of boats: whisper boats for the village, larger sloops for longer trips, and cruises with a skipper.

Rent a boat in Giethoorn: no license needed

You don't need a boating license for the rental boats. Book online ahead at busy times.

Prices vary. One rental company lists small whisper boats for up to 5 people from €20 an hour.

On public holidays and in July and August (11:00 to 17:00), boats wider than 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) may not use the village canal.

Giethoorn from Amsterdam: tour, train and bus, or car

1 h 40
train to Steenwijk
€29
one way (2026 fare)

A tour is the easy way. The train and bus take more planning but cost less.

There is no direct train Amsterdam to Giethoorn: you ride to Steenwijk and take the bus from there.

The train to Steenwijk takes 1 hour 36 minutes to 1 hour 44 minutes, with one change. It costs €29 one way in NS's journey planner (2026 fare).

Bus 70 runs all year from Steenwijk. Bus 270, the Giethoorn Express, runs from April to October. Together they run about every half hour, and the local tourist board puts the ride at about 15 minutes.

By car, you can park in and around the village, but you can't reserve a space.

Giethoorn is one of the longest day tours from Amsterdam, so compare it with the closer trips before you book.

In spring, one tour pairs Giethoorn with Keukenhof. We compare Keukenhof tickets and tours on their own page.

Driving is a real option for Giethoorn. Schiphol airport is the easy place to pick up a car.

Take a canal cruise of about an hour, or rent a whisper boat and steer it yourself for 1 to 2 hours. No license is needed. You can also walk the paths along the canals.

How do I get to Giethoorn from Amsterdam?
