Short answer

The best Amsterdam museums for a first visit are the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House. The first two cost from €27 on GetYourGuide. The Anne Frank House sells tickets only on annefrank.org. All three need a timed ticket bought online, and the I amsterdam City Card covers only the Rijksmuseum of the three.

The simple rule

Only two days? Book the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House first. All three sell timed tickets online only.

Fill the rest with Moco and the Rembrandt House. The Rembrandt House also sells tickets at its own desk.

Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Rembrandt House: the art museums

Rijksmuseum: 800 years of Dutch art and history in about 8,000 objects, with Rembrandt's The Night Watch in the Gallery of Honour.

Van Gogh Museum: more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 750 letters by Van Gogh. The Bedroom and Sunflowers are always on view.

Rembrandt House: the house where Rembrandt lived and worked, with an almost complete set of his etchings.

Art museums in Amsterdam: which one first?

Pick the Rijksmuseum if you want the Dutch masters and the country's history in one place.

Pick the Van Gogh Museum if you came for Van Gogh. It is the only one of the three not in the I amsterdam City Card.

Pick the Rembrandt House for a shorter visit. It can take as little as 45 minutes.

Anne Frank House and the history museums

Anne Frank House tickets are sold only on annefrank.org. New tickets go on sale every Tuesday at 10:00 CET, for visits six weeks later.

The tours on GetYourGuide are walks outside. The museum warns that tour sellers do not give access to the house.

For more history, one pick adds a 2-hour Anne Frank walk to entry to the Jewish Cultural Quarter. That covers the Jewish Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue and the National Holocaust Museum, but not the Anne Frank House.

The Anne Frank House is not for children under 10. With young kids, pick one of the other things to do in Amsterdam as a family.

Modern, street art and quirky museums: Moco, STRAAT and more

Street art: STRAAT is at the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam-Noord. A free ferry from behind Centraal Station gets you there in under 15 minutes.

Quirky: the Cannabis Museum is at Damstraat 6, near Dam Square, and most visitors spend about 45 minutes there. The Hash, Marihuana and Hemp Museum shows highlights from over 9,000 objects.

Science: NEMO Science Museum costs €21.50 from age 4. Both the City Card and the Museumkaart get you in free, if you book online.

Modern art museums in Amsterdam: Moco

Moco shows modern and street art by Banksy, Warhol, Haring, Kusama and others.

Its own shop sells adult tickets for €19.95 online. On GetYourGuide, tickets start from €17. The Museumkaart gives 30% off, not free entry.

Is the I amsterdam City Card or Museum Pass worth it?

The 24-hour City Card pays off if you fit three paid museums and the trams into one day. The Museumkaart pays off from about four big paid museums.

In the 2026 Amsterdam Travel Cost Study, the 24-hour card costs €67. About €10 of that is a day of trams and buses, so it pays off once your museum entries add up to more than €57.

Our own sum from the museums' sites: the Rijksmuseum (€25), the Rembrandt House (€23.50) and NEMO (€21.50) come to €70.

What the City Card covers

The card gets you into over 70 museums and attractions, including the Rijksmuseum. The Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House are not part of it.

The Total Experience card also covers GVB trams, buses, ferries and the Amsterdam metro, but not the NS train to Schiphol.

It adds a 24-hour bike rental and one canal cruise, so you can skip buying one of the Amsterdam canal cruises separately.

The Explorer card has no transport: you choose 3, 5 or 7 activities. With either card, you decide when it starts.

The Museumkaart museums pass

The Museumkaart costs €75 for adults and covers over 500 museums in the Netherlands for a year.

Visitors can buy a temporary card at a museum, even without a Dutch address. It is valid for 31 days, but it may allow only a few visits, so ask about the limit at the desk.

Which card to buy

Buy the City Card for one or two busy days with lots of trams. Buy the Museumkaart if the Van Gogh Museum and three or more other big museums are on your list.

With either card, you still book a time slot at the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, NEMO and the Anne Frank House.

Do you need to book ahead? Timing and crowds

Yes, for the big three. Book them in this order:

  • Anne Frank House: on the Tuesday six weeks before your visit, at 10:00 CET. Once a date sells out, there is no waiting list.
  • Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum: as soon as your dates are set. Both sell online only, with a start time.
  • The rest: Moco, STRAAT, the Rembrandt House and NEMO can wait until you know your plan.

Beat the crowds

At the Van Gogh Museum, the ticket listing says 11:00 to 15:00 is the busiest time. Go between 9:00 and 11:00, or after 15:00.

At the Rembrandt House, an off-peak ticket from 16:00 to 18:00 costs €19.50 instead of €23.50.

Buy Van Gogh tickets only from the museum or a named reseller such as GetYourGuide. The museum warns that other platforms may sell fake tickets.

How to plan a museum day

Group the museums by area, so you walk instead of ride:

  • Museumplein: the Rijksmuseum (Museumstraat 1), the Van Gogh Museum (Museumplein 6) and Moco (Honthorststraat 20).
  • Dam and the canal ring: the Royal Palace on Dam Square, and the Anne Frank House at Westermarkt 20, about a 10-minute walk from the Dam trams.
  • The Jewish Quarter: the Rembrandt House at Jodenbreestraat 4 and the Jewish Cultural Quarter.
  • Noord: STRAAT, a free ferry ride from behind Centraal Station.

How long each museum takes

The Anne Frank House takes about an hour on average. The Rembrandt House can take as little as 45 minutes.

Moco suggests about an hour and a half for the whole collection. NEMO says to stay a few hours.

The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum give no typical time. At the Rijksmuseum you can stay as long as you like, until closing.

Tickets or tours?

For most people, a ticket and the museum's own audio tour are enough. The Van Gogh Museum's tour comes in twelve languages, the Rijksmuseum's costs €6.50, and the Rembrandt House includes one.

A guide adds the story. The guided options are on each museum's own page, linked above.

Booking tips for Amsterdam museums

  1. Set a Tuesday reminder

Anne Frank House tickets go on sale every Tuesday at 10:00 CET, for six weeks ahead.

  2. Travel light

The Anne Frank House takes nothing bigger than an A4 sheet. The Rijksmuseum takes no large bags; a Lockerpoint at Museumplein stores luggage.

  3. Book slots even with a pass

The City Card and the Museumkaart do not skip the time slot at the big museums.

  4. Check what a tour includes

No tour on GetYourGuide includes the Anne Frank House. Read the "includes" list before you book.
