Vondelpark: A 5-Step Visitor Guide
Vondelpark is a public city park in Amsterdam with a rose garden, an open-air theatre, cafés and paved paths for walking and cycling. Tram 2 passes the park, and you can cross it on a rented bike or on a guided bike tour.
Here is the whole visit in one table. The steps below explain each row.
| Step | What to do | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Learn what Vondelpark is, who designed it and how big it is | The address is 1071 AA Amsterdam |
| Step 2 | Take tram 2 or ride in on a bike | GVB shows a tram about every 7 to 8 minutes in the daytime |
| Step 3 | Walk the paths, see the rose garden and watch a free show | The open-air theatre runs from May to September |
| Step 4 | Rent a bike in the city and follow the Dutch rules | Fatbikes are banned in the park |
| Step 5 | Choose between riding alone and a guided bike tour | Only one of the four tours names the park |
Step 1: Know what Vondelpark is and where it is
Vondelpark is a public park in Amsterdam, designed by the landscape architect Zocher. I amsterdam, the city's tourist board, says the park has national heritage status. It lists the address as Vondelpark, 1071 AA Amsterdam, so you can type that postcode into any map app.
The heritage company Stadsherstel Amsterdam says the first part opened in 1865 and that the 47-hectare park was finished in 1877. Its page calls the park a public riding and walking park. That fits how people use it today.
The city's own page on the park blocks automated readers, so we could only read search excerpts of it. A search excerpt from the Amsterdam City Archives says the park was enlarged in 1878 to about 48 hectares. We found no current official size.
The same excerpts cover the park rules. According to the city's park page, barbecuing is not allowed. Dogs may run loose in part of the park, and the city's dog map shows where. Elsewhere in city parks, dogs must be on a leash. I amsterdam adds that service dogs are allowed. No page we found publishes an alcohol rule for the park. Check the city's pages before you bring drinks. No official page gives a walking time either, so we do not guess one.
Step 2: Get to Vondelpark on tram 2 or by bike
Tram 2 is the easiest way to reach the park from the city centre. GVB, Amsterdam's city transport company, calls tram 2 a scenic route. It says the first part, from Centraal Station to Hoofddorpplein, passes the Vondelpark, the canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum.
GVB's line page shows a tram about every 7 to 8 minutes in the daytime for the week of 26 October 2026. GVB does not name a best stop for the park. The open-air theatre's directions page does, for its address at Vondelpark 5a. On the east side, trams 2 and 3 stop at Van Baerlestraat. On the south side, tram 2 stops at Cornelis Schuytstraat, near the Van Eeghenstraat entrance. On the north side, tram 1 stops at Constantijn Huygensstraat / Overtoom. That page says only that the park is reachable on foot, with no walking minutes. Tickets and contactless payment are explained in the guide to amsterdam public transport.
The same tram line passes the museums, so you can pair a park walk with a visit to one of the Amsterdam museums. You can also ride in from the city. Step 4 explains the rules for that.
Step 3: See what there is to do in Vondelpark
You can walk, ride, eat and watch free shows here. The tourist board lists a rose garden with more than 70 types of roses, a skate rental shop, an open-air theatre and several cafés. The cafés it names are the Blauwe Theehuis, Café Vertigo, Vondelpark3, De Vondeltuin and the Groot Melkhuis.
The park is public, and no official page we found states an entrance price or opening hours for it. The city's park page is the place that would publish them. The theatre's agenda page says the theatre is freely accessible to everyone. I amsterdam lists two free events: Allerzielen at the Vondelpark on 2 November 2026 from 18:30 to 20:30, and Pride Park on 31 July 2027 from 12:00 to 22:00. No official page we could open mentions a playground.
The open-air theatre is the one thing with a clear answer on cost. The open-air theatre says all its performances are free, and it asks visitors for a voluntary donation. It says the theatre is open almost every weekend from May to September, and that more than 100,000 people visit each year. The 2027 season dates are not published yet. The agenda page asks for a voluntary contribution at each show, by QR code, card terminal or collection box. The site has a page for reservations, but the page we checked does not explain how they work.
Key Takeaway The park's open-air theatre is free, runs almost every weekend from May to September and asks for a voluntary donation.
Here is the theatre's weekly rhythm, as its own site lists it.
A big city park is best seen slowly, on foot or on a bike.
Step 4: Ride a bike through Vondelpark by the Dutch rules
You can ride through the park on a normal bike if you follow the Dutch rules and leave fatbikes behind. The I amsterdam page on the park lists a skate rental shop and says nothing about bike rental. The official pages we checked name no rental shop near the park. So plan to rent a bike in the city and ride in. I amsterdam's cycling page puts the average daily rental price at €10.
The park has one rule of its own that matters for rental bikes. I amsterdam says fatbikes with pedal assistance and tyres wider than 7 centimetres are banned in the park, with the ban starting on 11 May. The fine is €115 for people aged 16 and over and €57.50 for ages 12 to 15. Children under 12 are not fined, but their parents or carers are contacted. According to a search excerpt of a city news item, the city kept the fatbike ban after a review. Fatbike riders can go round the park or get off and walk through.
Pro Tip Before you leave the rental shop, ask whether your bike is a fatbike. Tyres wider than 7 centimetres plus pedal assistance can cost you €115 in the park.
The rest are the rules for all of Amsterdam. Use the bicycle lane on the right, says I amsterdam, marked with white lines and bike symbols. The government's traffic brochure says your bike needs a white light at the front and a red one at the back at dusk, dawn and in darkness. It also says a helmet is recommended, not required, and that you may not hold a phone in your hand while you ride. The Public Prosecution Service's fine table lists €170 for a cyclist with a handheld phone, in amounts valid from 1 January 2026.
No page we found sets a general speed limit for cyclists in the park. The rental firms' own price lists were not readable either, so the only price we can cite is I amsterdam's average of €10 a day.
When you stop, lock your bike to a rack. Bikes parked elsewhere can be removed, and getting yours back costs a €25 fee, says I amsterdam.
If you would rather not rent, plan a route and handle city traffic on your own, an amsterdam bike tour lets a guide lead the way.
Step 5: Choose between riding alone and a guided bike tour
Ride alone if you only want Vondelpark, and book a guided bike tour if you want a local to lead the route and explain the city. Riding alone is the cheaper way: a rental bike averages about €10 a day, while the four tours below start at €22 per person. A tour adds a guide, a planned route and a group that handles the traffic together. You trade money and free time for a route someone else plans. All four tours show free cancellation on GetYourGuide. Ratings are rounded to one decimal and come from GetYourGuide, not from us. They run from 4.7 to 4.8, with 475 to 6,002 reviews per tour. Four different companies run the tours: We Bike Amsterdam, Yellow Bike Tours & Rental, AmsterBike and Guides and Tours.
The Best Travel Destinations' count of GetYourGuide listings for Amsterdam in October 2026 found 18 guided bike tours, from €20.90 to €90.00. All but one cost €45 or less. The €90 listing is an e-bike tour to the Zaanse Schans windmills.
Only one of the four tours below names the park. The Hidden Gems & Highlights guided bike tour by We Bike Amsterdam is from €38 per person and lasts 3 hours. Its listing names a ride on the park's paths among the highlights, next to the Jordaan and Museum Square. The tour has a local guide and bike rental, up to 12 people, and free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. The meeting point is Spuistraat 30, and drinks, snacks and a rain poncho are not included. GetYourGuide shows a rating of 4.8 from 1,520 reviews.
Three other tours ride through the city centre, and their listings do not name Vondelpark:
- The Relaxed City Highlights guided bike tour by Yellow Bike Tours & Rental is from €31.03 per person and lasts 2 hours. It includes the bike and a stroopwafel, and groups have up to 12 people. The listing says it needs experience with riding a bike in city traffic. Tips are not included. Guests meet at Nieuwezijds Kolk 29, and the rating is 4.7 from 1,183 reviews.
- The Big Bike tour by AmsterBike is from €36.50 per person and lasts 3 hours. The listing shows 2 meeting points, and the one you get depends on the option you pick. Group size also depends on the option: up to 45 people in a standard group and up to 50 in a private one. The bike and a stroopwafel are included, and a helmet is available on request. The rating is 4.7 from 6,002 reviews.
- The small-group bike tour with an optional canal cruise by Guides and Tours is from €22 per person and lasts 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Groups have up to 10 people, and the listing says at least 4 people must book for the tour to run. The meeting point is Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 114, and hotel pick-up, food, drinks and tips are not included. The canal cruise is optional and its tickets cannot be refunded with less than 48 hours' notice. The rating is 4.7 from 475 reviews.

A bike tour is the wrong choice if you cannot ride a bike or if you only want to sit in the park. The listings for the We Bike Amsterdam, Big Bike and small-group tours say people who can't ride a bike are not suited to them. A tour also rides on city streets, so it is not a quiet park visit. If you prefer to walk or sail with a guide, the guide to local tours in amsterdam covers the other kinds.
Ride through the city with a guide
Ride alone if you only want the park: a rental bike costs about €10 a day. A guide adds a planned route, local stories and a group that handles traffic. Only the We Bike Amsterdam ride names the park, from €38 per person with a bike and a guide. The other three ride through the city centre, from €22 to €36.50. All four are rated 4.7 or higher on GetYourGuide, with 475 to 6,002 reviews each and free cancellation. Four different local companies run them, and each card names its operator.
