Third Reich walking tours in Munich: what you will see

You will see the places where the Nazi movement grew in Munich: the Hofbräuhaus, the Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz and Königsplatz.

The tours trace Hitler's rise to power in Bavaria's capital, in the words of the walking tour's listing. The walking tour also covers the White Rose resistance movement.

The propaganda walk adds the Hofgarten. It also asks why so many people in Munich went along with the regime.

The Beer Hall Putsch in Munich: where it happened

Nov 8–9, 1923
the Beer Hall Putsch
20
people killed, per the Historical Lexicon of Bavaria

The Beer Hall Putsch was Hitler's failed attempt to seize power, on November 8 and 9, 1923. It began in the Bürgerbräukeller beer hall and ended at the Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz.

On the evening of November 8, Hitler forced his way into a meeting at the Bürgerbräukeller during a speech by Gustav von Kahr. He silenced the room with a shot.

On November 9, about 2,000 partly armed men marched toward the Feldherrnhalle. The Bavarian State Police stopped them in front of Odeonsplatz. According to the Historical Lexicon of Bavaria, 20 people died: 15 putschists, 4 police officers and 1 bystander. Other sources give slightly different numbers.

Hitler was tried in Munich in 1924 and convicted of high treason. He was sentenced to five years at Landsberg am Lech, where he dictated the first volume of Mein Kampf. He was released on parole on December 20, 1924.

After 1933, the Nazis turned the Feldherrnhalle and Königsplatz into places of yearly ceremony. The "temples of honor" on Königsplatz were torn down in January 1947.

Adding Dachau and the Obersalzberg

Many visitors add a tour of Dachau concentration camp memorial. Entry is free, and no booking is needed. The memorial is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and closed only on December 24.

On your own, take the S2 to Dachau station, about 25 minutes from the main station, then bus 726 to the memorial; see Munich public transport.

The Eagle's Nest above Berchtesgaden is closed until further notice after a fire on October 23–24, 2026. Our page on Berchtesgaden Eagle's Nest tours says what still runs to the Obersalzberg.

The Dokumentation Obersalzberg was not hit by the fire. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, but closed from November 16 to 24, 2026.

A WW2 walking tour or a full day

Take the 2.5-hour walking tour if you have one afternoon. Take the full day if you want memorial context with an accredited guide and can give it 8 hours.

Choosing the right tour

Look for a guide who tells this history with care. The full-day tour uses a memorial-accredited guide, and the propaganda walk shows historical photos at each stop.

Third Reich bike or Segway tour?

None of our picks is a bike tour. The Segway tour is the option on wheels; it takes 3 hours.

Is there a free Third Reich walking tour?

None of our picks is free. The lowest price is from €29, for the walking tour. For other city walks on a budget, see our Munich walking tours.

A self-guided walk: the stops the tours use

The tours use these stops: Marienplatz, the Hofbräuhaus, the Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz and Königsplatz.

Near Königsplatz, the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism opened in 2015 on the site of the former Nazi Party headquarters, the "Brown House". Entry is free. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm, at Max-Mannheimer-Platz 1 (U2 or U8 to Königsplatz).

Booking tips for Third Reich tours

  1. If a tour is cancelled or your plans change

All four tours show free cancellation on GetYourGuide. Read each tour's own terms before you book. The walking tour lets you change the date and time up to 24 hours before.

  2. Dress for the weather

These tours are mostly outdoors. The propaganda walk runs rain or shine.

  3. Check the age rules

Three of the four tours do not take children under 14.

  4. Visit with respect

These are places of history, and some are memorials. Keep your voice low at memorial sites.
