What is the Hofbräuhaus Munich, and where is it?

11 am – midnight
open every day

The Hofbräuhaus is Munich's best-known beer hall, at Platzl 9 in the Old Town. Duke Wilhelm V founded it on September 27, 1589, to brew beer for the Bavarian court.

The Hofbräuhaus restaurant: hours, seats and reservations

It is open every day from 11 am to midnight. The kitchen closes at 10 pm, and last drinks are at 11:30 pm.

Groups of four or more should reserve. The ground floor, the Schwemme, is free seating, so a couple can just walk in.

Hofbräuhaus beer and what it costs

A half liter of Hofbräuhaus beer costs €5.80 on the October 2026 menu. The wheat beer costs €6.10.

Hofbräuhaus beer: Original, Dunkel and the Hefeweizen

The menu lists Hofbräu Original, Dunkel and a seasonal beer. The wheat beer, which many visitors call Hefeweizen, is listed as Münchner Weisse.

The menu also lists one-liter beers, the Maß. In Munich, one Maß means one liter.

Beer gardens in Munich: which tour goes there

Only Beer & Beyond lists beer gardens: up to three beer gardens and beer halls in one evening. The other tours stay in beer halls, a brewery or food stops.

The big six Munich breweries, and the tours that visit them

Oktoberfest pours beer from only six Munich breweries: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Spaten and Staatliches Hofbräuhaus.

Their beer must follow two purity laws: Munich's from 1487 and Germany's from 1906. The better-known Bavarian Purity Law dates from April 23, 1516. The Bavarian state's anniversary page says its first wording allowed only barley, hops and water.

For a look inside a brewery, the beer halls and breweries tour is the one that includes a brewery visit.

The Hofbräuhaus tent at Oktoberfest

In 2026, a liter in the Hofbräu tent cost €15.80. If you are here in late September, the Hofbräu tent takes table bookings like the other big tents; see Oktoberfest tickets and tent seats.

Craft beer in Munich

Our picks pour the classic Munich beers. None of them is a craft beer tour in English.

The one craft brewery tour we found runs in German only, so it is not listed here.

Tips for a good beer tour

Eat along the way. The dinner tour and the food walks build food in, and the dinner tour asks you not to eat before.

Pace yourself. The beer halls tour does not allow drunk guests, and tours set their own age rules: 16+ or 18+.

Pair a daytime walk with an evening beer tour; see our Munich walking tours. In December, the beer garden gives way to mulled wine at the Munich Christmas markets.

After a night out, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn get you home; see Munich public transport.

Booking tips for Munich beer tours

  1. If a tour is cancelled or your plans change

All five picks show free cancellation on GetYourGuide. Read each tour's own terms before you book.

  2. Be early

The beer halls tour asks you to be at the meeting point 15 minutes before the start.

  3. Check the age rule

The beer halls tour is 16+. Beer & Beyond is 18+ and asks for a passport or ID card.

  4. No stag groups

The dinner tour is not for stag parties, and Beer & Beyond does not take bachelor or bachelorette groups.

Munich beer tours and the Hofbräuhaus: questions and answers
