Short answer

Yes, Munich is on the expensive side for Europe, but you can control most of the cost. Eurostat puts restaurant and hotel prices across Germany at 112.1 (EU average = 100, 2024). That is a national figure, not Munich alone. Our default trip is 4 nights for two people in a 4-star room. It costs about €1,465, which is €733 per person or €183 per person for each night. On a budget the same trip is about €1,029. In comfort it is about €3,339. Dates matter too: a 4-star night ran from €104 in December to €179 in a January trade fair week. Flights are extra.

How to spend less in Munich

  • Skip fair weeks and Oktoberfest. A 3-star room cost a median €97 in February and €146 in September (two nights a month, read once). Our September Saturday was the first day of Oktoberfest, and it is part of that median. Check the trade fair calendar before you book.
  • See the free sights first. The English Garden, Marienplatz and the Dachau memorial site cost nothing to visit. Spend your money on the one or two tours you care about most.
  • Compare 3-star and 4-star hotels. A 3-star night cost a median €112 per room, a 4-star night €121. The gap is small and changes by month, so check both. A 5-star night cost €482.
  • Buy a day ticket from the third ride. An MVV day ticket costs from €10.10 and a single ride from €4.20. So the day ticket wins once you ride 3 times.
  • Eat cheap at snack stands. A döner from a snack stand or a simple pizza costs about €6 to €11.90, two guides say. A mid-range restaurant meal is €20 to €50.
  • Walk the Old Town on your own. Your own free Munich walking tour costs nothing. A guided Old Town walk costs a median €26 per person.

Flights are not in this study. Their price depends on where you fly from and when.

What a trip to Munich costs for two

For two people at mid-range, a trip costs about €1,188 for 3 nights, €1,465 for 4 nights, €1,742 for 5 nights and €2,296 for 7 nights. Flights are not included. Five nights come to about €871 for each person.

Each row is the same trip in a different style, at the median over all the months we read (November 2026 to September 2027). It counts the hotel, 2 meals out per person a day, 2 tours, an MVV day ticket each day and the airport train both ways. Only the hotel class and the meal prices change.

Munich hotel prices by month

The median Munich hotel room for 2 adults cost €112 a night at 3-star, €121 at 4-star and €482 at 5-star. For a 4-star room, December 2026 was cheapest (€104). January 2027 was dearest (€179); our Tuesday that month fell in the BAU building fair. Each month rests on two nights, and some months were close to the cheapest one. During Oktoberfest prices jump: on its opening Saturday the same hotel asked a median 167.6 % more than on the Tuesday before (one Oktoberfest night read).

We read 2,820 prices of 406 hotels on Google Hotels on 27 October 2026. We took one Tuesday and one Saturday night in each month from November 2026 to September 2027, for 2 adults in one room. The star classes rest on 43 3-star, 40 4-star and 8 5-star hotels. Google labels few Munich hotels with stars, so we also ran a search for each star class. Those lists show Google's top hotels of each class, so they may lean dearer. Half of all 4-star nights cost between €84 and €175.

About these numbers

Each figure is the median price for one room and 2 adults per night, from Google Hotels. Each 5-star month rests on only 14 to 16 prices, so treat it as a rough guide. We read the prices months ahead. Closer to your dates, they can be different.

Weekend or weekday?

3-star 0% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 273 pairs
4-star −3.6% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 307 pairs
5-star 0% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 84 pairs
How we compared weekends

For 879 pairs of nights, we put one hotel's Saturday price next to its price on the Tuesday before. Overall, there was no clear weekend markup: the hotel asked more on the Saturday in 49 % of the pairs. We compared only a Tuesday with the Saturday after it, not other days. For 4-star hotels it was 45 %. Two months skew this. In January the Tuesday fell in a fair week, so Saturdays looked cheap. In September our Saturday was the opening day of Oktoberfest, and the same hotel asked a median 167.6 % more. The Oktoberfest opening Saturday is also part of the medians over all months.

Key findings of the 2026 Munich Travel Cost Study

  1. For stays advertised on Google Hotels on 27 October 2026, the median 4-star night in Munich ran from €104 in December 2026 to €179 in January 2027 (per room per night, 2 adults). Each month rests on one Tuesday and one Saturday read once, so single events move it: the January Tuesday we read fell during the BAU building trade fair, and the 4-star prices that night were far above the Saturday after it.
  2. Across all 22 nights we read, from November 2026 to September 2027, the 722 advertised 4-star prices (40 hotels) had a median of €121 per room per night for 2 adults, with the middle half between €84 and €175; the 687 3-star prices (43 hotels) had a median of €112. Most star-class prices come from Google's top-listed hotels of each class, which may lean dearer than the class as a whole.
  3. Munich hotels asked no clear weekend premium overall: in 879 pairs of a Tuesday and the Saturday after it, the same hotel asked more on the Saturday in 49% of cases, a median difference of 0%. January (the Tuesday fell during the BAU fair) and September 2027 were the exceptions; in September the Saturday we read is the opening day of Oktoberfest, and the same hotel asked a median 167.6% more than on the Tuesday before it (per room per night, 2 adults).
  4. Google listed only 8 five-star hotels in Munich for our dates; their 172 advertised prices had a median of €482 per room per night for 2 adults, from €417 in November 2026 to €911 in September 2027, the month whose Saturday was Oktoberfest's opening day.
  5. Restaurant and hotel prices across Germany were 112.1% of the EU average in 2024, the latest year Eurostat has published for its price level index (EU = 100); this is a national figure, not Munich alone. Published guides put a cheap meal in Munich at about €9 per person and a mid-range restaurant meal at about €34 (cited figures, not our measurement).
  6. A single MVV ride in Munich costs from €4.20 and a day ticket from €10.10 (cheapest zone), so the day ticket pays off from the third ride; a single ticket to or from the airport costs €15.10 (official MVV fares, read October 2026; fares can change). Munich charges no accommodation tax: Bavarian law bans local overnight taxes, and the Bavarian Constitutional Court upheld the ban, says the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior. Rules can change, so check the final price when you book.
  7. Our calculator puts a mid-range trip of 4 nights for 2 at about €1,465: one shared 4-star room at the median of all 4-star prices we read (November 2026 to September 2027), two mid-range meals out a day each, a Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip and a beer and food tour at their from-prices per person, a day ticket each day for each person and a single airport ticket each way for each person. Flights, breakfast and drinks are not included.

What we measured ourselves

  • Hotels: 2,820 prices of 406 hotels on Google Hotels, read on 27 October 2026. One Tuesday and one Saturday night per month, November 2026 to September 2027, 2 adults, one room; paid ads, listings without a price and duplicates left out. These are the prices advertised for those dates when we read them, not what guests later paid. Months are compared within a star class because Google shows a different set of hotels for each date. Star classes: Google's default hotel list for Munich labels only about a fifth of its hotels with a star class (1,223 of 1,558 prices unlabelled): 6-14 three-star, 10-21 four-star and 1-10 five-star prices a month, too few to compare months within a class; so we added one extra Google Hotels search per night for each star class, filtered to 3-, 4- and 5-star (requested depth 20; Google returned 36 listings per night for 3- and 4-star and 8 for 5-star, as it listed only 8 five-star hotels), same dates, 2 adults, one room; only hotels Google labels with that class are kept, and hotels already in the main search for that date are not counted twice (1,262 of the 2,820 prices). These count for all three star classes pool the main-search and filtered rows of that class in every month, built the same way; the all-hotel figures and month sample sizes use the main search alone: the all-hotel median rests on 1,558 prices.
  • Activities: the "from" prices of the 101 tours and tickets on our 20 activity pages (the table above), as shown on GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026; the calculator offers 12 tours, one per activity page. A "from" price is the lowest option a listing offers, not a typical price.

What we cite

  • Meals, drinks and car hire: figures published by travel guides, food-tour companies and rental platforms, found in Google search results and quoted word for word with their date. A range counts with its midpoint, each source once per group. Each meal tier rests on only two guides, so read the meal prices as a rough guide. The beer figures mix a half-litre price and a glass of unstated size. No figures from forums or social media. None comes from a page that shows a date in 2022 or earlier; many pages show no date at all.
  • Tourist tax, fares: the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, MVV.
  • Price level: Eurostat, price level index for restaurants and hotels (EU = 100), 2024.

How the calculator adds up

  • Our default trip: 4 nights, two people in one room, mid-range. The hotel is the median of all 4-star prices we read, November 2026 to September 2027 (€121). That median includes the January fair week and the Oktoberfest opening Saturday. Meals use the middle figure of two guides. The trip adds two tours at their from-prices: a Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip and a beer and food tour. The beer and food tour includes a dinner, so the meal line counts one meal more than you will pay for.
  • Hotel: nights × rooms (one per two travellers) × the median for the style's star class in that month (or the whole year).
  • Eating out: nights × travellers × meals a day at the style's meal price; in comfort, one fine dinner a day and the other meals at mid-range prices.
  • Car: days × the style's daily price. Activities: the from-price per person or per group.
  • Tourist tax: there is none in Munich, so this line is always €0.
  • Transport: nights × travellers × the MVV day ticket (€10.10, cheapest zone). Airport: two single tickets per traveller, one there and one back (€15.10 each). MVV also sells an Airport-City-Day-Ticket. It covers the airport trip and the city for a day, so it can be cheaper than singles, mainly for two or more people. Our airport line is on the high side.

Each line is rounded to whole euros.

Munich travel costs: questions

Is Munich expensive for tourists?

Yes, it is on the pricey side, but your choices decide a lot. Restaurant and hotel prices across Germany were 112.1 % of the EU average in 2024 (a national figure). At mid-range, two people pay about €183 each for every night of the trip. On a budget it is about €129, in comfort about €417. Trade fairs and Oktoberfest push hotel prices up. If you come for the fair, compare the tent tables and other tickets Oktoberfest visitors can book. Munich has no tourist tax. Work out your own trip.

How much does a beer cost in Munich?

About €5 in a pub, by published prices. One source gives the price of a half-litre, the other a glass of unstated size. In the Oktoberfest tents a Maß (one litre) costs €14.80 to €15.90 in 2026, two festival guides say. We found no beer hall price we could quote. See the sources.

Where can I stay in Munich on a budget?

Avoid fair weeks and Oktoberfest, and compare 3-star hotels. A 3-star night cost a median €112 per room for 2 adults. In February it was €97. See hotel prices by month.
