How to get to Neuschwanstein from Munich
You can go by tour, by train and bus, or by car. A tour is the easiest, because it plans the day for you.
By train, Füssen is the nearest station. From there, a bus runs to the stop "Hohenschwangau Neuschwanstein Castles". Check the train times on bahn.de before you go.
If you'd rather go on your own, our guide to the train Munich to Neuschwanstein walks you through the train and the bus. For tickets in the city, see our guide to Munich public transport.
By car, you cannot drive up to the castles. You park in car parks P1 to P4 in the village, for €12 up to 6 hours.
Pick your Neuschwanstein tour from Munich
Pick a tour by two things: whether the ticket is included, and how you want to travel.
Which Neuschwanstein guided tours include the castle ticket
The premium day and the half-day include the castle ticket. The Linderhof coach day includes it only if you pick the ticket option.
The other four sell it on the day. The van trip asks for €21 plus €2.50 in cash. Two coach days charge €26.50 for adults. Each listing shows the price it charges, next to the castle's own €21 plus the €2.50 online fee.
Guides on Neuschwanstein
Tour types side by side: full-day, castle plus Linderhof, half-day, small van and premium
The full-day trips run 9 to 11 hours, and the half-day runs 7. The van trip is the only one with hotel pickup; the others meet in central Munich.
The coach days are the cheapest, from €71 to €83. The van trip costs from €125, and the premium and half-day trips from €179 to €194, with the ticket included.
In winter, the Christmas market trip ends with a walk through the city's markets; see our guide to Munich Christmas markets.
Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Palace in one day
Two picks add Linderhof Palace: the coach day and the premium day. You see Linderhof only on a guided tour of about 25 minutes, in groups of up to 40.
Entry is €11, and under 18s go free. In winter (from 16 October) the palace is open 10:00 to 16:30. The Venus Grotto and the park buildings are closed then, and the fountains are off.
The Moorish Kiosk is under scaffolding. Its reopening is hoped for in 2028.
More castles, lakes and mountains are in our day trips from Munich.
Driving yourself to Füssen: how it compares with the train and a tour
- €12
- parking, up to 6 hours
- €3.50
- shuttle bus up, cash
You park in the village, then walk, ride the bus or take a carriage up to the castle.
Parking costs €12 for up to 6 hours. The castle shuttle bus costs €3.50 up or €5.00 for a round trip, paid in cash only.
Until about mid-December 2026, the main road through Schwangau is closed for roadworks. The detour goes via Hohenschwangau, so allow extra time.
Driving gives you your own start time and room for Hohenschwangau or a lake stop.
Can you go inside Neuschwanstein Castle?
Yes, but only on a guided tour at a fixed entry time. Tours run in German and English, and each has limited space.
Tickets sell out. Same-day tickets go on sale at the Ticket Center from 8:00, and they can be gone by late morning.
You cannot reserve by phone or email. Advance tickets are sold online only.
From 16 October 2026, tours run daily from 10:00 to 16:00. The castles are closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 January.
The Neuschwanstein Castle guided tour inside: about 30 minutes
The tour inside Neuschwanstein lasts about 30 minutes. There are many steps inside, so wear good shoes.
Hohenschwangau, the castle by Neuschwanstein
Hohenschwangau Castle stands below Neuschwanstein, in the same village. Its tour lasts about 45 minutes and costs €23.50 for adults.
The Kings-Ticket covers both castles on the same day: €43.50 for adults, plus a €5 fee, online only.
How long does the trip take?
Plan a full day: our full-day picks run 9 to 11 hours from Munich and back. The half-day trip takes 7 hours.
The castle asks you to reach the village at least 1.5 to 2 hours before your entry time.
Munich to Neuschwanstein and back: how the day runs
A tour leaves Munich in the morning and drives you to the village. You then walk or ride up, and the castle tour itself takes about 30 minutes.
Most of the day is the ride, the walk and the views. Some trips add Linderhof, the Wieskirche or a Munich walk on the way back.
What is Neuschwanstein Castle?
Neuschwanstein is a castle above the village of Hohenschwangau, near Füssen in Bavaria. The castle's Ticket Center runs all visits, as timed guided tours.
Its neighbor, Hohenschwangau Castle, is visited the same way. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings sits in the same village.
Best viewpoint, the walk up and what to wear
The walk up is steep, so plan for it. Here are your options from the village:
- On foot: about 40 minutes uphill from the Ticket Center.
- By shuttle bus: about 15 minutes' ride, then a steep 15-minute walk down to the entrance (about 600 m).
- By horse carriage: €8 up, then about 15 minutes' walk uphill to the entrance.
- In winter, the bus runs only when there is no snow or ice.
- Wear comfortable shoes: there are many steps inside the castle too.
The classic Neuschwanstein Castle photo from Marienbrücke
The famous view is from Marienbrücke, a bridge over the gorge. It is about 5 minutes on foot from the top bus stop.
In winter, the bridge can close for ice and snow. The castle tours still run when it is closed.
Tips for a Neuschwanstein trip
Sort the ticket first
Book the castle ticket, or a tour that includes it, before you go. Same-day tickets can sell out by late morning.
Go early in summer
Tours start at 9:00 in summer. An early start gives you the quieter hours.
If your plans change
The castle's own ticket cannot be exchanged or cancelled. All seven picks show free cancellation on GetYourGuide; read each tour's terms before you book.
Bring cash
Several tours want the castle ticket in cash, and the shuttle bus takes no cards.
