Short answer

Hotels are the biggest cost on a Toronto trip. A 4-star room cost a median $257 a night for 2 adults in our study. Our default trip is 4 nights at mid-range for 2 adults. It comes to about $2,273, or $1,137 per person. That is $284 per person per night. At the prices we read, the same trip would cost $2,081 for January and $2,853 for August. On a budget it is about $1,405; in comfort, about $4,743. We did not add the 6% Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) or the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax). Google's prices may already include some tax. Flights are not in the totals.

How to spend less in Toronto

  • Compare January and August. A 4-star room had a median of $209 a night in January. In August it was $402, or 92% more. We read January 74 days ahead and August 291 days ahead, so prices may change.
  • Choose a 3-star hotel. The 3-star median was $180 a night, against $257 for 4-star. With 3-star rooms and cheap meals, our 4-night trip drops to $1,405.
  • Check Saturday prices, mostly at 3-star. In 63% of our 3-star pairs, the Saturday night cost more than the Tuesday. The median gap was 7.2%. At 4-star the median gap was 1.9%. At 5-star it was -4.6%, so Saturday was cheaper.
  • Buy the TTC day pass from the fifth fare. A PRESTO day pass costs $13.50 and one fare costs $3.35. So the pass wins from fare number 5. A free transfer is not a new fare.
  • Mix in cheap meals. Guides put a cheap meal at about $15 to $25 per person. A casual restaurant meal is closer to $53.
  • Leave the car for day trips. Published car averages run from $36 to $75 a day. The day pass covers the subway, streetcars and buses for $13.50. Parking and fuel come on top of the car rate.

Flights are not in this study. Their price depends on where you fly from and when.

What a Toronto trip costs for two

At mid-range, two people pay about $1,777 for 3 nights and $2,273 for 4 nights. For 5 nights it is $2,769, and for 7 nights $3,761. A 5-night trip costs about $1,385 per person, without flights.

Here is one 4-night trip in three styles, at the price of an average month. Each total has the hotel and 2 meals out per person a day. It adds 2 activities, a TTC day pass every day and the UP Express both ways. The comfort style uses the 5-star median, which rests on only 14 hotels.

About these numbers

Each figure is the median price per room per night for 2 adults, as Google Hotels showed it. A 4-star month rests on 31 to 52 prices. A 5-star month rests on 21 to 28 prices from a small set of hotels. We read later months further ahead, up to 319 days. The mix of hotels also changes from month to month. So this is a measurement on one day, not a forecast.

Weekends

3-star +7.2% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 166 pairs
4-star +1.9% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 141 pairs
5-star −4.6% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 136 pairs
How we compared weekends

Each pair is one hotel, priced for a Saturday and for the Tuesday just before (592 pairs). Saturdays cost more mostly at 3-star: 63% of pairs were pricier, a median 7.2% more. At 4-star, 56% were pricier, but the median gap was small. Only 40% of 5-star Saturdays cost more. The gap changes a lot by month, up to 41.4% in February. We read only one Saturday a month, so treat this as a hint, not a rule.

We did not measure these prices. They are what travel and restaurant guides publish, quoted word for word and read on 30 October 2026. For cheap meals, guides say from about $15 to $25. The calculator uses the middle value of each group and counts each source once.

What activities cost in Toronto

The cheapest listing on our page for visiting the CN Tower starts at $53 per person. The cheapest Niagara boat ride with Journey Behind the Falls starts at $39 on our niagara city cruises page. Tours on our page about tourist attractions niagara falls have a median from-price of $100.

We measured these ourselves, from the tours on our pages, not every tour in Toronto. Each figure is the median starting price per person across the tours and tickets on one of our pages. GetYourGuide showed these prices on 29 October 2026. We changed euros to Canadian dollars at the European Central Bank rate. Where a page has few tours, its low and high are simply the cheapest and dearest one. Where a page has just one or two tours, the middle figure is simply the midpoint of their prices.

How much a rental car costs in Toronto

No one price fits. Published daily averages for Toronto car rentals start at $36 and reach $75, with $65 in the middle.

Budget $36 a day, lowest published average
Mid-range $65 a day, median of 3 published figures
Comfort $75 a day, highest published average

We did not measure these. They are published prices, and they differ a lot. The price depends on your dates, the car, insurance and fuel. The calculator uses the low, middle and high value for the three styles.

  • $36 a day: The average price to rent a car in Toronto is C$ 36/day momondo.ca
  • $65 a day: middle the average daily rate at Toronto Pearson is on average C$65 per day airportauto.ca
  • $75 a day: On average, car rentals in Toronto cost around CAD $75 per day roadgenius.com.au

Advertised minimums, not typical prices: from $16 a day (expedia.ca).

Compare rental cars at Toronto Pearson International Airport

Downtown, a car costs more per day than a day pass, and parking is extra. In our view you rarely need one there, since the subway, streetcars and buses reach most sights. A car helps more for day trips out of town. More in our guide to getting around Toronto.

Key findings of the 2026 Toronto Travel Cost Study

  1. For stays advertised on Google Hotels on 30 October 2026, a 4-star night in Toronto cost a median $402 in August 2027 against $209 in January 2027, 92% more (per room per night, 2 adults; one Tuesday and one Saturday per month, 10 months ranked up to September 2027, each read once).
  2. For 3-star hotels the advertised monthly median ran from $158 per room per night (December 2026) to $224 (August 2027), 2 adults; across all 22 measured nights a 3-star night had a median of $180 and a 4-star night $257.
  3. Toronto's 5-star hotels asked a median $1,078 per room per night in September 2027 against $565 in January 2027, 2 adults (Google Hotels' 5-star list for each measured night; only 14 hotels and 21 to 28 prices a month, so close months such as August and September are within noise).
  4. Saturday nights cost more mainly at the lower end: in 166 pairs of a Tuesday and the Saturday after it, 63% of 3-star hotels asked more on the Saturday, against 40% of 136 5-star pairs (per room per night, 2 adults).
  5. A 4-night trip for 2 adults in a 4-star hotel, eating two mid-range meals a day, riding the TTC on a day pass, taking the UP Express from Pearson Airport, a Niagara Falls day tour and Casa Loma adds up to $2,273 without adding the 6% Municipal Accommodation Tax or HST (sales tax), or $284 per person per night (hotel prices from our measurement, meals from cited sources).
  6. Published guides put a cheap meal in Toronto at about $18 per person, a casual restaurant meal at about $53 and a set or tasting menu at about $115 per person (medians of a small set of cited sources, not our measurement).
  7. On the TTC a PRESTO one-ride fare costs $3.35 and a day pass $13.50, so the pass pays off from the fifth paid fare (a free transfer is not a new fare); the UP Express from Pearson Airport to Union Station costs $12.35 per adult one way (official fares).

Method, data and reuse

What we measured ourselves

  • Hotels: 1,838 prices of 229 hotels on Google Hotels, read on 30 October 2026. One Tuesday and one Saturday night per month, November 2026 to September 2027, 2 adults, one room; paid ads, listings without a price and duplicates left out. These are the prices advertised for those dates when we read them, not what guests later paid. Months are compared within a star class because Google shows a different set of hotels for each date. November 2026 was read at short notice; both are shown but not ranked. Star classes: Google's default hotel list for Toronto (depth 60) held only 3-9 priced 5-star prices a month, too few to compare months within the 5-star class; so we added one extra Google Hotels search per night filtered to 5-star (depth 20; Google returned 15-16 listings, 10-14 priced 5-star hotels per night, 14 distinct hotels), same dates, 2 adults, one room; only hotels Google labels 5-star are kept (282 of the 1,838 prices). These count for the 5-star figures only, from the filtered rows alone in every month (main-search 5-star rows stay in the all-hotel figures); the all-hotel figures, the 3- and 4-star figures and month sample sizes use the main search alone: the all-hotel median rests on 1,556 prices.
  • Activities: the "from" prices of the 103 tours and tickets on our 22 activity pages (the table above), as shown on GetYourGuide on 29 October 2026; the calculator offers 12 tours, one per activity page (3 of them from pages with too few per-person prices for the table). A "from" price is the lowest option a listing offers, not a typical price.

What we cite

  • Meals, drinks and car hire: figures published by travel guides, food-tour companies and rental platforms, found through Google searches in Canada and quoted word for word with their date. A range counts with its midpoint, each source once per group. Each meal group rests on only two or three sources, so read the meal figures as a rough guide. The cheap-meal figures are upper limits ("under" a price). The tasting-menu figure mixes one tasting menu, one set menu and one package price. No figures from forums or social media. None comes from a page that shows a date in 2022 or earlier; many pages show no date at all.
  • Hotel tax (MAT), fares: the City of Toronto, TTC.

How the calculator adds up

  • Our default trip: 4 nights at mid-range, 2 adults in one room. The hotel is the 4-star median of all the nights we read ($257). Each person eats 2 meals out a day and rides with a TTC day pass. The UP Express runs to and from the airport. Two tickets are included: Toronto: Niagara Falls Day Tour + Boat & Behind Falls Entry ($75) and Toronto: Casa Loma Entry Ticket ($45). These are the cheapest options on their listings, so you may pay more. There is no car in the total. The "any month" hotel rate is one median of every price we read, November included. The totals have no drinks, tips, breakfast, souvenirs, parking, fuel or insurance.
  • Hotel: nights × rooms (one per two travellers) × the median for the style's star class in that month (or the whole year).
  • Eating out: nights × travellers × meals a day at the style's meal price; in comfort, one fine dinner a day and the other meals at mid-range prices.
  • Car: days × the style's daily price. Activities: the from-price per person or per group.
  • Hotel tax (6% MAT): not added. The City of Toronto charges it as a share of the room rate, and HST is due on top. Google Hotels does not show whether its prices include these taxes. If your rate leaves them out, add them to the hotel line.
  • Transport: nights × travellers × the TTC day pass ($13.50). Airport: two UP Express rides per traveller ($12.35 each), one in and one out. We count these apart from the day pass, so arrival and departure days may be counted twice.

Each line is rounded to whole CAD.

Toronto travel costs: questions

Is Toronto expensive?

Hotels are the biggest cost. A 4-star room cost a median $257 a night for 2 adults in our study. A 4-night mid-range trip for two comes to about $2,273. We did not add the 6% hotel tax, HST or flights. For food, a few guides put a cheap meal at about $18 per person.

How expensive is Toronto?

Plan on about $284 per person per night at mid-range. That covers a shared 4-star room, two meals out, two tickets, a TTC day pass and the airport train. On a budget it is about $176 per night. In comfort, with a 5-star hotel, it is about $593. Flights are extra.

Is Toronto very expensive?

It can be in summer and at the top end. A 4-star night cost a median $402 in August, against $209 in January. The 5-star median was $751 a night, from a small set of hotels. A 3-star room, at a median $180, keeps the trip far cheaper.

Is Toronto expensive to eat?

It depends on where you eat. A few guides put a cheap meal at about $15 to $25 per person. A casual restaurant meal costs about $53, and a set or tasting menu about $115. Sales tax and the tip come on top of menu prices. These figures come from only two or three sources each.

Is Toronto costly?

For a short trip, the hotel is the biggest cost. On our 4-night mid-range trip for two, the hotel is $1,028 of the $2,273 total. Food is $848. TTC passes and the airport train add only $157. So the biggest ways to cut costs are the star class, the month and where you eat.

What is the best month to go to Toronto?

For low hotel prices, January was the cheapest ranked month for a 4-star room in our sample ($209 a night). August was the most expensive ($402). Winter is cold, so weigh price against weather. We read January 74 days ahead and August 291 days ahead, and each month once, so this is a measurement, not a forecast.

How much should I budget for a week in Toronto?

A 7-night mid-range trip for two comes to about $3,761, or $1,881 per person. The 4-star hotel is $1,799 of that and meals out are $1,484. Flights, hotel tax and HST are not added. Set 7 nights in the calculator to change the style or month.

What does a hotel cost for a whole stay in Toronto?

For 7 nights in a 4-star hotel, the median adds up to about $1,799 for one room and 2 adults. In the city centre, the Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto in the Entertainment District & Downtown Core had a median of $421 a night in our sample. We did not price hotels near Pearson Airport on their own, so compare those rates with the medians here.

What does getting around Toronto without a car cost?

A TTC day pass costs $13.50 per person and covers the subway, streetcars and buses. One fare costs $3.35. The UP Express from Pearson Airport to Union Station is $12.35 per adult one way. We did not collect taxi or ride-hail prices.

Is a Niagara Falls day trip cheaper on your own or with a tour?

A popular Niagara Falls day tour from Toronto on our page, with the boat ride and Journey Behind the Falls, starts at $75 per person. If you go on your own, the boat ride and Journey Behind the Falls ticket starts at $39, and you pay the train or bus on top. We did not collect train or bus fares to Niagara Falls, so check them before you compare.
