Things to do in the Toronto Distillery District
- 364
- days a year open
- 1832
- the distillery was founded
Walk the cobblestone streets, shop and eat. The district calls itself a "13-acre walking district", about 5 hectares.
It began in 1832 as the Gooderham & Worts Distillery. Parks Canada lists about 30 brick and stone buildings from 1859 to 1927. It made the site a National Historic Site in 1988.
Of all the neighbourhoods in Toronto, it is one of the easiest to explore on foot.
The district is open Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Each shop and restaurant keeps its own hours.
Distillery tours in Toronto: history, Segway or tastings
For history, take the 1-hour walk; for fun, take the Segway. Both meet at 11 Gristmill Lane.
The history walk goes inside and outside the buildings. The Segway ride lasts 30 minutes after a short training. Its listing calls the site once the largest whisky distillery in the British Empire. That is the operator's claim.
The breakfast walk takes 75 minutes. The 6-tasting food tour starts at St. Lawrence Market and ends here.
Distillery District food and drink
Beer, cheese and breakfast are the tastes tours bring you here for. The beer and cheese tour stops at Mill St Brewery, Wildly Delicious and Old Flame Brewery.
It is for ages 19 and up, Ontario's legal drinking age. The breakfast walk serves food from local shops.
