Is Journey Behind the Falls worth it?
Yes, if you want to feel the power of the falls up close. You go down through 130-year-old tunnels in the rock to viewing spots behind the Horseshoe Falls. The entrance is on the first floor of the Table Rock Welcome Centre.
The visit takes about 60 minutes. You may get a little wet. Niagara Parks does not say that a poncho is included.
Work is under way. A restored tunnel with a covered, heated viewing platform is planned for spring 2027, and a new Rainbow Platform for spring 2028. The attraction stays open during the work.
Our advice: if you are short on time and already doing the boat, you can skip it. If you only have time for one or two attractions at Niagara Falls, our guide ranks them, with the boat and the Skylon Tower.
Open all year: Journey Behind the Falls in winter and at night
Yes, it is open every day, all year. Niagara Parks lists no special winter hours. Arrive at least one hour before closing.
Journey at Night runs with the nightly lighting of the falls. In fireworks season the fireworks start at 10 p.m. Arrive 15 minutes before your time slot.
Journey Behind the Falls tours: guided combos
A guided combo is the easy way to add the boat. Each of the four guided picks includes Journey Behind the Falls. Three include the boat, though the Skylon combo swaps it for another ride from January to April. One adds the boat if you choose that option.
With a guide, you also skip buying each ticket yourself. The early-start tour does Journey Behind the Falls first, at 8:30 a.m.
The other Niagara Falls tunnel tour: the Power Station
The Power Station tunnel is a different place, not Journey Behind the Falls. It is in the Niagara Parks Power Station, which is open all year.
Its tunnel is about 670 m (2,200 ft) long and 55 m (180 ft) underground. It ends at a deck at the river's edge. A day visit takes about 2 hours, and general admission needs no booking.
At night the station reopens for a sound and light show called "Currents". Our night pick includes the tunnel and the show.
