2026 Houston Travel Cost Study
How much a trip to Houston costs
Four nights in Houston for two people, at mid-range, add up to about $1,007 before the 17% hotel tax, flights not included. A Forbes analysis, reported by Houston First, lists Houston among the “Least Expensive U.S. Destinations” for its small rise in travel costs, and our 3-star median was $85 a night. Change the nights, people, style and month below to price your own trip.

Short answer
$1,007 is our estimate for four nights at mid-range for 2 people, before the 17% hotel tax. That is $504 per person, or $126 per person per day. Food guides put a cheap meal at about $7 per person, and a METRO Day Pass costs $3.
Our 3-star median was $85 a night, per room for 2 adults. In our sample, the same trip cost about $937 in November and $1,277 in March. Budget travellers spend about $591; the comfort style comes to about $2,095. Costs climb most with 4-star hotels in March and with tasting menus. Flights are extra.
How to spend less in Houston
- Look at November for a 4-star room. In our 25 October 2026 read, a 4-star night cost a median $104 in November, against $189 in March (82% more). January and July came close ($109). The two months rest on 30 and 24 prices, read 23 and 142 days ahead. So take it as a hint, not a rule.
- Pick a 3-star hotel. A 3-star night cost a median $85, against $121 at 4-star. In February, the 3-star median fell to $64.
- In a 4-star hotel, a Saturday often costs no more. In our sample, only 32% of 4-star hotels asked more on a Saturday night than on the Tuesday before (101 pairs). Two in three asked the same or less. We read Saturday nights only, not Fridays. At 3-star it was 52%, and on our April dates Saturdays cost a median 19.7% more.
- Buy the Day Pass from the third ride. One METRO ride costs $1.25 and a Day Pass $3. So the pass pays off once you ride 3 times in a day.
- Eat cheap for one meal a day. Food guides put a cheap meal at about $7 per person, against about $24 at a casual restaurant. Swap one casual meal a day for a cheap one and you save the difference.
- Check the CityPASS Houston maths first. The pass, listed as Houston CityPASS®: Save up to 51% at 5 Top Attractions, starts at $82 per person. Single tickets for two of its sights, Space Center Houston and the science museum, start at $55 together. So the pass only pays off if you also visit the other sights in it.
We leave flights out, because fares depend on your home airport and your dates.
What a trip to Houston costs for two
For two people at mid-range, a trip costs about $784 for 3 nights, $1,007 for 4 nights, $1,230 for 5 nights and $1,676 for 7 nights. Hotel tax and flights come on top. Five nights work out at about $615 for each traveller.
Here is our 4-night default in three styles, in any month. Included: the hotel, 2 meals out for each person daily, 2 tickets, a METRO Day Pass each day, and the airport bus there and back. Budget uses a 3-star hotel. Mid-range and comfort both use a 4-star hotel, because too few 5-star hotels showed prices. Comfort adds one tasting menu a day, so read it as a splurge.
| Style | Hotel | Eating out | Activities | METRO fares | Total | Per person per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star hotel, cheap meals | $340 | $112 | $110 | $29 | $591 | $74 |
| Mid-range Our default 4-star hotel, mid-range meals | $484 | $384 | $110 | $29 | $1,007 | $126 |
| Comfort 4-star hotel, one fine dinner a day | $484 | $1,472 | $110 | $29 | $2,095 | $262 |

Hotel prices in Houston by month
Our median hotel night in Houston was $85 for a 3-star room and $121 for a 4-star room, per room for 2 adults. For a 4-star hotel, November, January and July were among the lowest months ($104 to $109 a night). March was the highest ($189).
On 25 October 2026 we collected 1,511 Google Hotels prices from 332 Houston hotels. The sample covers a Tuesday night and a Saturday night in every month, November 2026 through September 2027, always one room for 2 adults. Of these hotels, 140 are 3-star and 49 are 4-star. The other 143 have another rating or none. So few 5-star hotels showed prices that we leave that class out. The middle half of 4-star nights cost $85 to $181.
By month and star class
Why compare by star class? Google shows prices for a different set of hotels on each night. So a March list and a November list are not the same hotels. We compare within one star class, but the hotels in it still change from night to night. Many months sit close together, so read the gaps between them with care.
| Month | 3-star | 4-star |
|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | $75 | $104 |
| December 2026 | $80 | $112 |
| January 2027 | $86 | $109 |
| February 2027 | $64 | $116 |
| March 2027 | $84 | $189 |
| April 2027 | $76 | $142 |
| May 2027 | $88 | $130 |
| June 2027 | $97 | $133 |
| July 2027 | $94 | $109 |
| August 2027 | $90 | $124 |
| September 2027 | $92 | $142 |
About these numbers
Each figure is the middle price for one room and 2 adults, per night. A 4-star month is based on 24 to 45 prices, which is a small number. We read the nights 23 to 324 days ahead. Prices closer to the date can differ. This is not a forecast.
Weekends
How we compared weekends
For each hotel we set its Saturday rate next to its rate on the Tuesday earlier that week. That gave 329 pairs in all: 152 at 3-star, 101 at 4-star and 76 at hotels with another rating or none. Across all of them, 43% asked more on the Saturday. At 4-star it was 32%. At 3-star it was 52%, a median 1.6% more. We read one Tuesday and one Saturday a month, so each month is a single week. On the April dates we read, Saturdays cost a median 19.7% more. On the May dates, the median change was -19.6%, so Saturdays were cheaper.

What tickets and tours cost in Houston
A basic Space Center Houston ticket starts at $30 per person. The 2 listings for Downtown Aquarium-Houston tickets we found start at $70 and $82. Outdoor trips cost more: on our ATV ride Houston page, the median from-price is $80.
We read these ourselves: the lowest listed price of each tour and ticket we feature, on GetYourGuide on 25 October 2026. GetYourGuide lists them in euro. We changed them to dollars at the European Central Bank rate of 23 October 2026. A from-price is the cheapest option of a listing, not a typical price. Medians per person. The kayaking row includes full-day tours and courses, so its median is far above a simple kayak rental, which starts at $22.

Free things to do in Houston
Many of Houston's best sights were free to enter when we checked: two art museums, a famous chapel and three big parks.
- Free The Menil Collection
A large art museum in Montrose, free to enter when we checked. The park around it is free too.
- Free Rothko Chapel
A quiet chapel with large dark paintings by Mark Rothko, next to the Menil.
- Free Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
Changing shows of new art in the Museum District, with no entry fee when we checked.
- Free Discovery Green
A downtown park with a lake, lawns and events. Walk over from the downtown hotels.
- Free park Hermann Park
Gardens, a lake and trails next to the museums. The zoo and the pedal boats cost extra. See the Museum District and Hermann Park.
- Free park Buffalo Bayou Park
Trails along the bayou west of downtown. The Cistern tour costs extra, a median $14.99 per person.
Entry rules and opening hours change, so check each place's own website before you go.
Which area to stay in
Stay downtown or in the Museum District if you will not rent a car: METRORail links the two. Pick Uptown, Clear Lake or Galveston only if you will drive.
- Downtown No car needed
The airport bus ends at the Downtown Transit Center. METRORail runs south from here to the museums. Discovery Green and the ballpark are close.
- Museum District & Montrose Museums and parks
The Red Line stops by the museums and Hermann Park. Montrose, next door, has cafés and the Menil. You walk or take a bus there.
- Uptown / Galleria Shopping
Tall hotels around the Galleria mall. The train does not reach it, so plan on rides or a car.
- Clear Lake / NASA Near the Space Center
Close to the Space Center and Kemah, but far from downtown. It suits a trip built around space.
- Galveston Beach and cruises
An island town about an hour's drive south, with the cruise port. See our Galveston day trips if you only want one day there.
Our hotel prices are not split by area: there are too few prices per area to compare them fairly.
How much a rental car costs in Houston
Published daily averages for a Houston rental car run from $49 to $110, with $74 in the middle. No one figure fits every trip.
These are published prices, not our measurement. They depend on dates, the car, insurance and fuel. The lowest figure is for one brand's small car in one month, so it is not a city average. The calculator uses the three values for the three styles.
- $49 a day:
$49 per day on average
momondo.com, read 25 October 2026 - $74 a day: middle
On average, car rentals in Houston cost around USD $74 per day
roadgenius.com, read 25 October 2026 - $110 a day:

skyscanner.com, read 25 October 2026
Advertised minimums, not typical prices: from $10 a day (expedia.com and another page) · from $31 a day (roadgenius.com).
Houston is spread out. You can reach downtown and the museums by METRORail, but the Space Center and Galveston are far out. Many visitors rent a car for one day only. More on getting around Houston.
Hotel tax, METRO fares and the airport bus
Houston has no fixed tourist fee per night. Instead, the hotel tax adds 17% to the room rate. Our totals leave it out, because we cannot tell if the advertised prices include it. Check the final price before you book.

What we measured ourselves
- Hotels: 1,511 prices of 332 hotels on Google Hotels, read on 25 October 2026. One Tuesday and one Saturday night per month, November 2026 to September 2027, 2 adults, one room; paid ads, listings without a price and duplicates left out. These are the prices advertised for those dates when we read them, not what guests later paid. Months are compared within a star class because Google shows a different set of hotels for each date.
- Activities: the "from" prices of the 67 tours and tickets on our 17 activity pages (the table above), as shown on GetYourGuide on 25 October 2026; the calculator offers 12 tours, one per activity page (2 of them from pages with too few per-person prices for the table). A "from" price is the lowest option a listing offers, not a typical price.
What we cite
- Meals, drinks and car hire: figures published by travel guides, food-tour companies and rental platforms, found through US Google searches and quoted word for word with their date. A range counts with its midpoint, each source once per group. Each meal tier rests on two or three sources only. Use these meal figures as a rough guide, not exact prices. The tasting-menu figure comes from two set menus. No figures from forums or social media. None comes from a page that shows a date in 2022 or earlier; many pages show no date at all.
- Hotel tax, fares: the Texas Comptroller, METRO.
How the calculator adds up
- Our default trip: 4 nights at mid-range, 2 people sharing a room. For the hotel we use the 4-star median across every night we read. It counts two meals out per person a day, one METRO Day Pass per person per day, and a bus ride to and from the airport. Two tickets are in it: Houston: Space Center Houston Admission Ticket ($30) and Houston: Museum of Natural Science General Admission Ticket ($25). Each is the lowest option of its listing. It has no car days. Reaching the Space Center needs a car or a tour, and neither is in the total.
- Hotel: nights × rooms (one per two travellers) × the median for the style's star class in that month (or the whole year).
- Eating out: nights × travellers × meals a day at the style's meal price; in comfort, one fine dinner a day and the other meals at mid-range prices.
- Car: days × the style's daily price. Activities: the from-price per person or per group.
- Hotel tax (17%): not included. It is a share of the room rate, made up of state, city, county and sports authority taxes. Google Hotels does not make clear whether its prices already contain it. If your price leaves it out, add it to the hotel line.
- Transport: nights × travellers × the METRO Day Pass ($3). Airport: two rides per traveller on METRO Bus 102 from IAH ($1.25 each), one there and one back. We add these rides apart from the Day Pass, so your first and last day may be counted twice. The airport bus takes cash only, and the driver gives no change.
Each line is rounded to whole dollars.

Houston travel costs: questions
Is Houston expensive to visit?
It depends on your hotel and your dates. Our median 3-star room was $85 a night and our median 4-star room $121, per room for 2 adults. Food guides put a cheap meal at about $7, and a METRO Day Pass costs $3. Our default trip for two, 4 nights at mid-range, comes to about $1,007 before the 17% hotel tax and flights. 4-star hotels in March and tasting menus are where costs climb. Work out your own trip.
Is Houston cheaper than other big US cities?
We did not price other cities, so we cannot rank Houston against them. One outside view comes from Houston First, the city's tourism office. In its article Forbes: Houston Among Least Expensive U.S. Destinations (read 26 October 2026), it writes: “Houston is among the cities with the smallest increase in overall travel costs, according to an analysis by Forbes.” That is about how fast prices rose, not what a trip costs today. Our own figures: a 3-star room had a median of $85 a night, and our default trip for two comes to about $1,007.
How much is a round-trip flight to Houston?
We did not measure flights, so this page gives no fare. Fares depend on your home airport and your dates, and they change every day. Add your own fare to our total: about $1,007 for two people and 4 nights, or $504 per person. After you land at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, METRO Bus 102 from IAH to downtown costs $1.25 per person, cash only.
Approximate cost of a weekend in Houston?
Our shortest set trip is 3 nights. For two people at mid-range it costs about $784, or $392 per person, before hotel tax and flights. For a two-night weekend, set the nights in the calculator. In our sample, two in three 4-star hotels charged the same or less on a Saturday than on the Tuesday before: only 32% asked more.
How much spending money would I need for one week in Houston?
Not counting the hotel and the flight, plan on about $65 per person per day at mid-range. That covers two casual meals, a METRO Day Pass, two tickets and the airport bus, spread over the trip. Meals and the Day Pass alone come to $51 a day. On a budget it is about $31 a day, or $17 without tickets. In comfort style it is about $201. A rental car is not in these figures. For one person alone, a budget week of 7 nights costs about $772 before hotel tax. That covers a whole 3-star room ($595), two cheap meals a day ($98), two tickets ($55), a Day Pass each day ($21) and the airport bus ($3).
What does a day at Space Center Houston cost?
A basic Space Center Houston ticket starts at $30 per person, so $60 for two. The center is far out, south-east of downtown, and METRO does not get you there easily. So a full day there also needs a ride, and there are two ways to add it. A ticket with a round trip by bus from Houston starts at $80 per person, so $160 for two, ride included. Or rent a car for the day: published averages run from $49 to $110 a day. With the middle figure, $74, two basic tickets and the car come to $134, plus fuel and parking. Our default trip already counts the basic ticket for both travellers, but not the ride there.
Without a car, what do METRO, Uber or Lyft cost?
On METRO, one local bus or METRORail ride costs $1.25. A Day Pass costs $3 and covers local buses and METRORail for the whole day. From the airport, METRO Bus 102 from IAH costs $1.25. We did not measure Uber or Lyft fares, so we give no rideshare price. Check the app for your own route. METRORail links downtown and the Museum District. For the Space Center or Galveston, most people take a tour or rent a car for a day.
Do I need a car in Houston, TX?
Not for downtown and the Museum District: METRORail links them, and a Day Pass costs $3. For the Space Center or Galveston, a car helps. Published daily averages run from $49 to $110. See car hire costs.
Which month was cheapest in our sample?
For 4-star hotels, November, January and July were among the lowest months, at $104 to $109 a night. The gaps between them are small. March was the highest, at $189. At 3-star, February came lowest ($64) and June highest ($97). We read every month once, on 25 October 2026, so this can change.
Before a Galveston cruise, should I stay in Houston or in Galveston?
We cannot tell you which is cheaper. We read hotel prices for Houston as one sample and did not split them by area, so we have no Galveston hotel prices. In our Houston sample, the median night was $85 at 3-star and $121 at 4-star, per room for 2 adults. The 17% hotel tax comes on top. Galveston is about an hour's drive south, so a night in Houston means an early drive on cruise day. Compare both towns for the same night before you book. See where to stay in Houston and our Galveston day trips.
How much is the hotel tax in Houston?
17% of the room rate. It is made up of state, city, county and sports authority taxes, according to the Texas Comptroller. There is no fixed fee per night on top.
