Houston Museum District and Hermann Park at a glance

Hermann Park is a free city park with the Japanese Garden, the Houston Zoo and the Miller Outdoor Theatre inside it. The Museum of Natural Science is on Hermann Park Drive too.

The Museum of Fine Arts and the Children's Museum are nearby, in the Museum District. The district is a group of separate museums. There is no single ticket that covers them all.

So pick two or three places, and check each one's free hours before you buy.

Which museums are free, and when? Museum free days in Houston

Hermann Park and its Japanese Garden are free every day. The big museums each have one free slot a week, and most need a reservation.

If you want the zoo too, Houston Zoo prices change by date, and the first Tuesday of each month is free with a reservation.

Start at the Museum of Natural Science when it opens at 9 a.m. Then walk into the park and see the Japanese Garden, which opens at 9 too.

After lunch, go to the Museum of Fine Arts. It opens at 11 a.m., from Wednesday to Sunday.

On a Tuesday, do it the other way round. See the park by day, then visit the Museum of Natural Science free from 5 p.m.

On a Thursday, families can end the day at the Children's Museum's Free Family Night, 5 to 8 p.m. Reserve two days ahead.

Museum tickets: which to book (compare the options)

For one museum, buy that museum's own ticket. The Museum of Natural Science is from €22, the Museum of Fine Arts from €9 and the Children's Museum from €21 here.

All three are official tickets with free cancellation. None has a free slot on a weekend, so a weekend visit means a paid ticket.

The Health Museum and the other museums on the museum pass

The 11-museum pass covers The Health Museum, the Holocaust Museum Houston, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum and more. It also lists the Museum of Natural Science and the Children's Museum.

A pass makes sense only if you will visit three or more of its museums. It starts from €36, and it skips special exhibitions.

The CityPASS is a different pass. You pick 5 of 7 sights, and it does include the Museum of Fine Arts.

The main Houston, Texas museums: Natural Science, Fine Arts, Children's Museum

The Museum of Natural Science is the one for dinosaurs, gems and space. Its butterfly house and planetarium need their own tickets.

The Children's Museum is built for kids. Exhibits include a three-story climbing tower and a city run by kids. Its event page says many exhibits are temporarily closed, so check before you go.

The Museum of Fine Arts is the big art museum of the district. Its listing names nearly 80,000 works spanning 5,000 years.
