Rent a kayak in Houston: the downtown rental

The downtown rental is the best-rated way onto the water. You pick a kayak or a paddleboard and go at your own pace, for 1 hour up to a full day.

It starts at 1019 Commerce Street, downtown. You can leave your keys with the staff, but leave other valuables at home.

Bring a change of clothes, sunscreen and water. Minors need a waiver signed by a guardian.

Houston kayak tours on the bayou: guided options

The sunset skyline tour is the short guided option, 2 hours from €53. It has a low rating, 3.3 from 5 reviews, so read the reviews first.

The full-day Buffalo Bayou trip and the Luce Bayou trip come from one operator, OAK GeoSciences. Both are new on GetYourGuide, with no reviews yet.

Their listings name small groups of up to 5 and an experienced trip leader. Without reviews, you are trusting the listing, so free cancellation matters here.

Where to go kayaking around Houston

Downtown, you paddle the bayou that runs through Buffalo Bayou Park, so you can paddle and then walk the trail.

The other trips go further out: upper Buffalo Bayou, Luce Bayou and The Woodlands. Their listings name only the area, not an exact meeting point.

Most of these trips start outside the center. See getting around Houston to plan the ride there.

Bumper boats and kayaks at Discovery Green

Discovery Green's page says its 1-acre Kinder Lake is open for kayaking. We could not read current prices or bumper-boat details, so check the park's own site.

Galveston kayak tours

This page lists no Galveston kayak tour. Our Galveston day trips guide has a 4-hour sea-kayak trip to the SS Selma shipwreck.

What to bring and what is included

94.5°F
Normal July high
Jun–Nov
Hurricane season

On the guided trips, the kayak, paddle and life jacket are included. The longer trips also give you a small dry bag.

Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and clothes that can get wet. Wear water shoes: the longer trips do not allow sandals, flip-flops or jeans.

Plan for heat. The normal July high in Houston is 94.5°F. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so watch the forecast.

Classes and adaptive paddling

Two classes teach skills. The dads-and-daughters class covers kayak basics in 6 hours. The flatwater canoe course teaches launching, landing and strokes in 5 hours.

The adaptive eco-tour in The Woodlands is for paddlers with disabilities. You ride as a passenger in a tandem boat. The listing excludes wheelchair users and non-swimmers, so ask the operator first.

All three are new on GetYourGuide, with no reviews yet.

Other ways to enjoy the outdoors

If you would rather stay on land, there are plenty of free outdoor things to do in Houston.

The trails along Buffalo Bayou are free to walk, and the bats under the Waugh Drive Bridge come out at sunset.

Tips for kayaking in Houston

  4. Budget for park fees

Some trips leave from parks with a day-use fee per car, such as $6 on the full-day trip. It is not in the price.
