Is Galveston close enough for a day trip from Houston?

Yes. Galveston Island is 50 miles south of Houston, on the Gulf of Mexico, as the city of Galveston puts it.

That is close enough for a day there and back. Most of the trips on this page last 45 minutes to 2 hours, so they fit into one day with time to spare.

Getting to Galveston with and without a car

With a car, you drive the 50 miles yourself and stop where you like. Our Houston to Galveston guide has the drive and the shuttle step by step.

Without a car, the round-trip shuttle is the simple choice. It leaves from 800 Capitol St downtown, costs from €63 and gives you 5 hours on the island.

The island bus, Galveston Island Transit, runs on the island only. For trips off the island, the city says to contact other agencies. Amtrak lists Galveston only as a connecting stop by bus, with no train station there.

For buses and trains inside Houston, see our guide to getting around.

No train runs to Galveston, so driving yourself is the most flexible way.

How to spend one day in Galveston

Start with the morning dolphin cruise at Pier 21. It lasts 45 minutes, and Visit Galveston reports departures every 30 minutes.

From the boat you see the Strand Historic District and Seawall Boulevard. After lunch, spend the afternoon at the Pleasure Pier or Moody Gardens; check hours on their own sites.

End the day with the sunset cruise, for adults only. Or ride the free ferry to Bolivar and back.

Things to see and do in Galveston, TX, in one day

  • Morning: the 45-minute dolphin cruise from Pier 21.
  • Late morning: the harbor and the Strand, which the cruise passes.
  • Afternoon: the Pleasure Pier or Moody Gardens.
  • Evening: the 1-hour sunset cruise, or the free ferry.

Where to stay, eat and find the beach

To wake up by the water, see where to stay in Houston and Galveston. Our Galveston hotel list is further down this page.

For food, the shuttle hands out a tip sheet with food ideas. We have not checked any Galveston restaurants, so we name none.

The shuttle drops you at the Pleasure Pier entrance on Seawall Blvd, right on the Gulf. The dolphin cruise also passes Seawall Boulevard.

Boat trips and cruises: which one fits you

The dolphin cruise fits most people: it is short, cheap and runs in daylight. The other trips suit a narrower group.

Galveston boat tours compared: length, time of day, who they suit

  • Dolphin cruise: 45 minutes, daytime, from €29. For families and first-timers.
  • Sunset cruise: 1 hour, evening, from €40. For adults; bring your own drinks.
  • Haunted Harbor cruise: 1 hour, at night, from €47. For ghost stories; rated 3.1.
  • SS Selma kayak trip: 4 hours, daytime, from €238. For fit paddlers aged 8 and up.

Boat tours near Houston: Kemah and Clear Lake

The BYOB cruise leaves from Seabrook, near the Kemah Boardwalk, on the bay side. It lasts 2 hours and costs from €54.

It is closer to Houston than the island, so it works if you do not want to go all the way to Galveston.

Day tours that include the trip from Houston

Two picks take care of the ride from Houston. The rest start in Galveston or Seabrook, so you need your own way there.

If you drive down yourself, the Space Center is southeast of downtown, on the same side of the city. See our page on Houston Space Centre tickets.

Day tours from Houston that do the driving

The round-trip shuttle takes 7 hours in all, with 5 hours free on the island. It is a ride, not a guided tour.

The private package from €247 per person includes airport transport, a downtown tour and a Galveston tour. A 45-minute cruise and a 7-hour shuttle day are very different, so pick by how much time you have.

Side-by-side: what each tour includes

Most of these trips include the boat, the crew and little else. Tips, food and parking are usually extra.

Fun things to do for families and couples

Fun things to do in Galveston depend on who you bring: kids want the dolphins and rides, couples want the sunset.

Things to do in Galveston with family

The dolphin cruise is stroller accessible, and infants sit on a lap. Moody Gardens says it is open 365 days a year. It also says a Galveston Children's Museum will open there in November 2026.

The Pleasure Pier sells all-day ride passes. Its site does not list a price, so check before you go.

Fun things to do on Galveston Island for couples

The 1-hour sunset cruise is made for adults, and you bring your own drinks. On the bay side, the 2-hour BYOB cruise from Seabrook suits a couple with friends.

Free things to do in Galveston

The best free thing in Galveston is the ferry to Bolivar. It is toll-free, parking at the lots is free, and it runs 24 hours a day.

The crossing takes about 20 minutes, plus time to load. In the busy season, waits can be more than 2 hours. Service can be cut for safety.

Near Houston, the Kemah Boardwalk on the bay charges no entrance fee, but parking costs money.

You can also look at Battleship Texas from Pier 21. The ship is closed for repairs, and its foundation is targeting 2027 to reopen.

Hidden and less obvious stops

Galveston's quieter sights are mostly on the water. You need a boat, or a long look from shore.

  • The SS Selma, a concrete ship from the WWI era, rests in the bay. The kayak trip paddles to it, and the night cruise passes it.
  • Seawolf Park is where the kayak trip starts. It charges $6 per vehicle.
  • The submarine USS Cavalla sits at the Galveston Naval Museum. The Haunted Harbor cruise passes it.
  • Battleship Texas is moored at a shipyard in Galveston for repairs. It is closed to visitors.
  • The shuttle stops at a haunted hotel and the oldest beach house in Texas.

Before you book: cancellation and what to bring

All seven picks show free cancellation on GetYourGuide. That matters on the coast, where the weather can turn fast.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with a peak around September 10. Check the forecast the day before.

The kayak trip runs rain or shine, but not in strong wind. Wear closed-toe shoes; jeans and sandals are not allowed.

Evenings on the water feel cooler, so bring a jacket for a night cruise. For the Haunted Harbor cruise, arrive at Pier 21 20 minutes early.

All seven trips show free cancellation on GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026.

Tips for a Galveston day trip

  1. Book the morning cruise

A morning dolphin cruise leaves the rest of the day free for the pier, Moody Gardens or the beach.

  2. Ask about luggage

The shuttle needs approval for luggage. Send a message through GetYourGuide before your trip.

  3. Bring a change of clothes

The shuttle suggests a second outfit in the hot summer months.

  4. Plan for extras

Tips, food and parking are not in most prices. The kayak trip adds a $6 park fee per vehicle.
